A no-frills lodge halfway up Mount Tokachi, about 20 minutes from Kamifurano. The draw is all in the baths: a large indoor rock bath, and several outdoor pools of varying temperature, including a spacious mixed-gender open-air area where swimsuits are required. The spring carries a mix of calcium sulfate and acidic sodium chloride minerals, bracing and distinctly Hokkaido. At night with snow falling and steam rising, it is hard to beat.
