Classification

Sodium-Calcium Chloride spring

An alkaline simple sulfur spring. With pH 9.67 to 9.9, it is strongly alkaline and delivers a remarkable slippery feel, placing it squarely in the Japanese beauty-water family. A faint sulfur taste and unmistakable rotten-egg note come through on entry, from dissolved hydrosulfide and thiosulfate ions. Mineralization is light at 579 mg/kg, so the body of the water stays gentle even as the sulfur character holds its own.

278. Sanogawa Onsen, Yamanashi Visited for higaeri at 650. Listed hours 8:30–19:30 (last entry 18:30), except the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Located near the Yamanashi-Shizuoka border, countryside atmosphere. They stamp the 100 Onsen of Yamanashi booklet. Based on a photocopy — the onsen was featured in the manga Yuru Camp. Newspaper clippings about the place are also displayed. Online photos match. Plenty of visitors in the morning with many local elderly men who immediately took interest in us. One old man told us he drives here from Shizuoka because the onsen is great. The elders at reception tipped off the owner that we're from Russia — the owner got very excited and started telling us about relatives married to someone from Russia. Inside there are two baths with clear water, comfortable to breathe. One bath at 40, the other around 30. There's a cup available to drink the water. Outdoor area with two stone baths. Clear water with some lime deposits. One bath around 30 degrees, the other slightly warmer. Getting here is inconvenient and far, but the place is great and clearly popular with locals.
