The bath at this Gojo hotel runs off a well of its own, sunk 1,300 metres down: a sodium chloride spring that keeps you warm long after you get out. There is an open-air bath alongside the big indoor one, plus jets and a sauna, and because it stays open late into the night a good share of the bathers are locals rather than hotel guests. It sits by the Yoshino river (吉野川), a few minutes' walk from Gojo Shinmachi (五條新町), the preserved merchant street that holds what is reckoned to be the oldest dated house in Japan. No private baths here.
