A simple thermal spring rising in the Wanoshiro area of Kiyotaki, in the city of Nikko. It is strongly alkaline, and that shows in the feel: the water is noticeably slippery on the skin, placing it in Japan's beauty-water family. Mineralization is light, so nothing about the bath is harsh — yet at the source the water carries a faint rotten-egg note of H₂S, the one flash of character in an otherwise colorless, clear and tasteless water.

About

Yashio-no-yu is a day-use bathhouse run by the city of Nikko. The spring water is clear and faintly slick, smooth on the skin, which is why it's popular locally among women. The indoor bath is a long, bright room lit through big windows, and the stone-built rotenburo looks out over a hedge to forest and mountains. Baths are split by gender, with a cold plunge on the men's side and a bubble bath on the women's, plus a low-temperature sauna. Beyond the baths there's a tatami rest area with massage chairs, a restaurant open even to non-bathers, a small gift shop, and a game corner with picture books for kids. It reads less like a resort and more like a well-used neighborhood bathhouse.

779. Nikko Wanoshiro Onsen Yashio-no-yu, Tochigi ★ Onsen for ¥1000. Opening hours are listed as 10:00 to 21:00 (except Thu). There were many Japanese people with tattoos. The bath photos from the internet only partly match, the vegetation is sparser in winter. 1. Indoor area. It is fine to breathe inside. 1.1. Rectangular bath with clear water, temperature 41. 1.2. Sauna. 1.3. Round cold bath. 2. Outdoor bath in stone. There is not much of a view. The water is clear, temperature 40.5. A pleasant place, worth keeping in mind. 11.01.2026
