A hot (44 C) bicarbonate spring with sodium, magnesium, and calcium sharing the cation load. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, it sits in Japan's beauty-water family. A generous 181 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

88. Mochigahama Onsen, Beppu ★ A no-frills old-school onsen for ¥100. The posted hours are 06:30 to 22:00 (except the third Wednesday of the month). They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do stamp. No staff, no shower. I met the elderly lady who owns the onsen. She lives on the second floor of this house. When I was getting my stamp, she had just come in with some papers. She gave me props for the number of stamps in my passport and showed me where everything was. Overall, the atmosphere felt like I had dropped by my grandmother's onsen. The water is clear, and the temperature is 45.5. It is easy to breathe inside. 29.04.2024 03.01.2026
