Hotel New Mitoya is a large ryokan at Akiu onsen (秋保温泉), the hot spring resort in the hills outside Sendai that's been drawing bathers since the Kofun period and was once favored by the Date domain lords. Bathing here is split across three separate halls, Suishinkyo (水心鏡), Gekkyuden (月宮殿), and Umenosho (梅の粧), each mixing indoor and outdoor rock baths with cold plunges; saunas are in Gekkyuden and Umenosho, not Suishinkyo. Three private kashikiri (貸切) baths can be booked the same day for a family or small group, and day-use bathing runs on its own hours separate from overnight stays. The spring water is clear and lightly salty, the kind locals say keeps you warm long after you've toweled off.
