Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate spring

The Yakushi spring at Sakura-yu is classified as a weakly radioactive simple thermal water — light on total dissolved solids (270 mg/kg) but carrying a substantial 141 Bq/kg of radon, which places it in Japan's hormesis-tradition radon-spring lineage. Alkaline at pH 8.86, the water is soft on the skin, and a generous 71 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the faint moisturising film that makes the touch noticeably smooth. Sampled from a drinking fountain, this is the source served for insen (drinking spring) (drinking) at the bath, with a long-standing reputation for chronic GI complaints.

388. Sakura-yu - Yamaga Onsen Motoyu, Kumamoto Onsen for 350 yen in a classic building. Operating hours listed as 06:00 to 24:00 (closed every 3rd Wednesday). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. Various newspaper clippings featuring the onsen are displayed at the reception. Photo from the internet partially matches — in the men's bath there was only a Kumamon with a towel on its head (without a basin). Inside a spacious room there's a large bath with a separate rounded zone inside. Clear water, temperature around 40-41. About 5-7 meters from the bath stands a Kumamon figure roughly 1.3-1.4 meters tall. Large vintage advertising posters hang above the bath in frames — very old-school, adding to the atmosphere. Breathing inside is good. Cool place with a combination of nice features — recommended for a visit.
