MountainsYuyado Marubun keeps its bathing simple: separate indoor baths for men and women, and no rotenburo. The inn says that trade-off keeps the soak quiet, without outside noise or scenery pulling at your attention. The spring water is mild and light on minerals, the kind locals call 'beauty-skin' water for how smooth it leaves the skin, and the men's bath looks out over the river and green mountains. The ryokan is an old wooden building in Dorogawa Onsen (洞川温泉), a mountain town that grew up as a lodging stop for Shugendo (修験道) ascetics and still keeps its retro streets lit by lanterns at night. River-facing rooms look out over the clear Sanjogawa (山上川) stream to Ryusenji (龍泉寺), a temple tied to that same ascetic tradition, on the far bank.

695. Yuyado Marubun, Dorogawa Onsen, Nara Stayed overnight. There's also higaeri for 500, but the time slot is unclear. Checked into this ryokan as an alternative arranged by Kohryokuen Nishisei after their booking mistake. More details in the Kohryokuen Nishisei review. The ryokan itself has a Showa-era feel. Tatami room is a bit worn but comfortable. Service-wise, the male staff tried their best but did things somewhat stiffly. The woman serving dinner provided good service but in a more homey style. Overall the attitude, while not strictly by-the-book, was warm, and I liked it. As I understand, they put together my meal from whatever ingredients they had, and since my original ryokan had double kaiseki, here they simply doubled the portions. Indoor bath with clear water, temperature around 42. Could see momiji through the window. You could technically open it to see the bright tree, but right across the window on the other side of the embankment people would walk by. A bit stuffy inside if the window stays closed. Wouldn't have chosen this ryokan myself for Dorogawa, but the stay and the overall attitude were comfortable. 13.11.2025 14.11.2025
