Sulfur

A simple sulfur spring of the hydrogen-sulfide type — the wellhead boils at 100 °C and is cooled to 55.5 °C for the baths, placing it among Japan's hottest natural sources. Weakly acidic with a faint tang on the skin, the water carries the unmistakable H2S note the cert calls out. The simple classification means light total mineralization, so despite the sulfur signature the touch on the skin stays gentle.

About

Located just a few minutes' drive from the Beppu Interchange. Popular as an affordable family bath. The bath, carved from a single rock, is filled with hot water that flows vigorously. The water contains many mineral deposits (yunohana). The temperature is adjusted to an ideal level for a pleasant soak. The shower provides cold water only. Outside, eggs are cooked in hot water in the jigokugama kettle, and you can buy them hot and fresh.

117. Shiraitonotaki Onsen, Beppu ★★ An onsen with the option to reserve one of three available private baths. Baths No. 1 and 2 are smaller balcony-type baths with a window, bath No. 3 is an indoor bath that is slightly larger. The price is ¥1000 on weekdays for up to 2 adults (¥500 extra for each additional person), on weekends the price is ¥1500, and during New Year and Golden Week it is ¥2000. Opening hours are listed as 10:30 to 20:00 (except Thursday). They stamp the Beppu Onsen stamp rally. If there is no staff at the reception, you need to ring the bell (it is on the left). There is a shower, but only cold water. There was no full water composition table (only general information), but I found a photo of the appropriate full one online. 1. Bath No. 3. Indoor bath. The water is slightly cloudy, with fine white mineral deposits. Temperature is 42. It is easy to breathe inside. 2. Bath No. 1. Indoor bath, the window can be opened. When standing, you can see the surroundings over the fence, but when sitting in the bath the view is blocked. The water is clear, with fine white mineral deposits. Temperature is 42.5.
