463. Tsurunoyu, Beppu ★★★ A wild onsen, getting there without a car would be inconvenient. On the approach, there are signs about crime. The path to the onsen goes through a cemetery. It is very popular with locals, and you can also meet tourists, but in practice nobody gets in anyone’s way. There is a roof, and there is a women’s changing room. The bath photos from the internet match. To the left of the entrance to the onsen area, there is a path up the hill. During the mountain burning event at the April festival in Beppu, that spot is a great viewing area, and apart from us there was nobody there. After the burning, you could go straight down into the onsen and warm up. The onsen consists of a sequence of baths and areas: 1. The first bath, where the water from the source enters. The water is clear, with fine white mineral deposits, and very little mud. Sulfur smell. Temperature 45.5. 2. A small bridge-wall with openings. 3. The second bath. The water is clear, with fine white mineral deposits, and very little mud. Sulfur smell. Temperature 44.5. 4. The outflow area, which is also the washing area before visiting the onsen. A super cool wild onsen, not very convenient to get to, but overall it is fairly close to the city. 01.04.2025 04.04.2025
