463. Tsurunoyu, Beppu Wild onsen, inconvenient to reach without a car. On the approach there are signs about crime. The path to the onsen goes through a cemetery. Very popular with locals, tourists can also be encountered, but nobody bothers anyone in practice. Has a roof and a women's changing room. Bath photos from the internet, accurate. To the left of the onsen area entrance there's a trail up a hill. During the Beppu mountain burning festival event in April, it's an excellent viewing spot where we were the only ones there — and afterward you can go down straight into the onsen to warm up. The onsen is a sequence of baths and zones: 1. First bath, where water from the source enters. Clear water with fine white mineral deposits, minimal mud. Sulfur smell. Temperature 45.5. 2. Bridge-wall with openings. 3. Second bath. Clear water with fine white mineral deposits, minimal mud. Sulfur smell. Temperature 44.5. 4.
