463. Tsurunoyu, Beppu ★★★ A wild onsen, getting there without a car would be inconvenient. There are signs about crime on the approach. The path to the onsen goes through a cemetery. It is very popular with locals, and you can also meet tourists, but in practice nobody gets in anyone's way. There is a roof, and there is a women's changing room. The bath photos are from the internet, and they match. To the left of the entrance to the onsen area there is a path up the hill. During the mountain-burning event at the festival in April in Beppu, there is a great viewing spot there, and apart from us there was nobody else. After the burning, you could go straight down into the onsen and warm up. The onsen consists of a sequence of baths and areas: 1. The first bath, where the water from the spring enters.
