Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

A sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring serving the Hamada bathhouse in Beppu's Kamegawa district. Hot at 54 degrees Celsius, neutral pH, with a faint salty edge on the tongue at the source. Moderately mineralized (1,627 mg/kg dissolved solids) — the chloride backbone retains warmth while sulfate adds a quiet body that settles the water on the skin.

About

A traditional communal bathhouse where the bathing area and changing room are integrated. Historically known as Hamada Kosen or Uchikama no Yu, it is said to have been discovered around 1897 according to mid-Meiji period literature. The onsen built in 1935 had the bath on the first floor and a community center on the second floor, used for many years. In April 2002, a new single-story reinforced concrete Japanese-style onsen was opened in front of the old one. Compared to the conventional municipal onsen, it is designed to be easier to use for elderly people, with wide passages and no steps to allow wheelchair access. Handrails are also installed in the bathtub and changing area for convenience.

91. Hamada Onsen, Beppu ★★ A very old-school onsen for ¥200, with no staff, no body soap, and no shower. The posted hours are 06:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 22:30. They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do seal. It is located opposite a small, interesting onsen museum in a similarly classic building. The water is clear, slightly cloudy. In the evening the temperature was 46, but inside the onsen they recommend diluting it to 42. It was easy to breathe inside. Cherry blossoms were visible from the onsen window. 05.04.2025

91. Hamada Onsen, Beppu ★★ An onsen in a classic building, with high ceilings, so it feels comfortable to breathe. Admission is ¥200, and you need to ask the lady at the entrance separately for the stamp. There are no gels, shampoo, or showers. It is located across from an interesting small onsen museum in a similarly classic building. Inside there is one bath. The water is clear, just slightly cloudy. The water temperature is hot+. Recommended to visit together with the museum combo. 30.04.2024
