Nakamura-ya is a small ryokan on Toshijima, a fishing island in Toba Bay you can only reach by ferry, no cars cross over. The indoor bath draws on the island's own cold mineral spring, called Mizugami-no-yu (水神の湯) after the local water deity; it's clear and kept warmed, split into separate rooms for men and women, both looking straight out over the bay. Up behind it, on a bluff about 30 meters above the water, sits an open-air tub (not the spring itself, and closed through the winter) where you can watch fishing boats work the channel between the islands. There's also a hinoki-lined private bath you can book by the hour, with its own sea view. Day-use bathing comes with a fresh seafood lunch, and the inn has been taking guests on the island since 1924.
