Iwato Onsen

Iwato Onsen is a small inn in Hinatayama Onsenkyo (日当山温泉郷), a Kirishima hot-spring area with old ties to Saigo Takamori (西郷隆盛). The main bath sits in a rock-lined tub filled with undiluted spring water that runs kakenagashi (掛け流し), kept flowing fresh rather than recirculated, alongside a small cold-water bath and an open-air bath with benches that gets lit up after dark, clear enough on a good night to see stars. There's no sauna, but the baths are stocked with shampoo, conditioner and body soap, and a reservable private bath, kashikiri-yu (貸切湯), runs on separate hours from the main one. What keeps people coming back is the water itself: reviewers describe it as silky and slippery, leaving skin noticeably smooth after a soak. Simple overnight rooms are also available for those who want to stay.
