483. Morinoyu Resort, Beppu ★★ Visited for higaeri at 1300. Higaeri available from 10:00 to 22:00 (April to October) and 15:00 to 21:00 (November to March). They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do book. There are additional outdoor and indoor baths available only for overnight guests. This is a mixed bathing onsen, but with clothing. The bath area is literally visible from the hotel entrance. You can wear your own clothes or rent for 300. Maximum impact is being there without other visitors and wearing proper bathing attire rather than pool swimwear. We visited after the mountain burning event at the Beppu Onsen Festival. The burning mountain is visible from many onsen, and during cherry blossom season it was a combo — you could simultaneously see several types of cherry blossoms and the burning mountain from the rotenburo. Water in all baths was clear, but I can't comment on cloudiness or tint since we visited late at night. According to online photos, the water ranges from clear, to slightly cloudy, to opaque blue. The water temperature posted on the website between the baths was one thing, but ours was different. Maybe because of the late evening, maybe just how they set it. 1. Large stone bath, water temperature around 35-37. 2. Square bath with the best mountain view, temperature 40. 3. Square bath, temperature 43. 4. Square bath, temperature 38. 5. Square bath with bubbles, temperature around 37. 6. Foot bath. 7. Cold bath. Really great place — large stone rotenburo, mixed bathing. Yes, the clothing requirement is a downside. Suits either beginners at any time because of the clothing, or those wanting a more authentic atmosphere should aim for early morning or late evening with proper bathing attire instead of pool swimwear. 04.04.2025
