Totsukawa Onsen Public Bath Iorinoyu

A village-run bathhouse in the middle of Totsukawa Onsen (十津川温泉), deep in the mountains of southern Nara above the Futsuno (二津野) dam lake. Totsukawa was the first village in Japan to declare all of its springs source-fed (kakenagashi, 掛け流し), meaning nothing gets recirculated, reheated, diluted or chlorinated, so the indoor tub holds sodium bicarbonate-chloride water exactly as it comes out of the ground, soft and easy on the skin. Outside the building there is a footbath, a hand bath and a fountain where you can drink it.
