"soda" — softens skin, leaves it smooth.
Known good for
  • Aches & jointsstiff shoulders
  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Recoveryfatigue, stress

A simple thermal spring with one striking number behind it: metasilicic acid at 196 mg/kg. Dissolved solids are light at 0.93 g/kg, so the water itself is undemanding, and its mild alkalinity makes it soft on the skin — the silica is what places it in Japan's beauty-water family, leaving the kind of thin film that has skin feeling noticeably smoother afterwards. Sodium leads the cations and bicarbonate the anions, though both sit at modest concentrations. The sample was drawn from the site's storage tank rather than the wellhead.

About

A municipal onsen that preserves the traditional style of a public bathhouse. It was formerly called Nageshi-yu, Nigii Onsen, or Ichiya Onsen. The previous onsen was located elsewhere. When local volunteers drilled a source on land they had acquired, they found high-quality water. While they were thinking about how to use it, a small wooden bathhouse was built overnight, which is why it was named Ichiya Onsen (one-night onsen). Located in central Beppu City, countless people have been bathing here since infancy. The current building was constructed in 1991, and next to it is a post-bathing rest area, a pocket park made of stones from Yantai, China.

104. Nageshi Onsen, Beppu ★★ An old-school onsen in a historic building for ¥200. The listed hours are 06:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 22:30. They stamp the Beppu onsen-do stamp rally. They also stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. Staff are present. There is one shower with cold water. The water is clear, and the temperature is 44.5-45. Breathing inside is great. The bath area inside is very cozy and spacious, with high ceilings and old windows. A nice onsen, recommended for a visit. 30.04.2024 02.04.2025 28.12.2025
