About

Set in beech forest at Tsubame Onsen (燕温泉) in the mountains above Myoko, this lodge-style ryokan was founded by Miyazawa Hideo, a demonstrator for the All-Japan Ski Federation and a pioneer of Japanese technical (kiso) skiing. The bathing setup is built around alternating between a hot sulfur indoor bath and an unheated cold outdoor bath. Warming up and then plunging into cold spring water is the thing to do here, and guests tend to repeat the cycle. The building has a sturdy, characterful interior with the founder's memorabilia in the lobby.
