A sodium chloride spring with sulfate adding quiet body, drawn from one of Japan's hottest natural sources at 92.9 °C. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, it sits in the moderately mineralized range with noticeable body. A generous 197.5 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

Atagawa Prince Hotel sits on a hilltop above Atagawa Onsen, and its rooftop open-air bath, Kunpu (薫風), looks straight out over the sea and sky, open enough that it feels like floating. Two large indoor bathhouses, Umiiro (海色, "sea color") with seven tubs and Sorairo (空色, "sky color") with five, each have their own sauna and swap between the men's and women's sides through the day. Two smaller baths can be booked for a private soak: a hinoki-wood one called Tsukiakari (月明り, "moonlight") and a ceramic one called Hoshiakari (星明り, "starlight"). The spring is the hotel's own, clear and faintly salty, and guests often mention how soft it leaves the skin. The hotel has stood on this rise above town since 1959, and the height is still the point: the rooftop bath catches the sunrise and a view toward the Izu islands, with the steam of Atagawa's hot-spring streets rising below.

205. Atagawa Prince Hotel, Izu ★★ I visited for a day trip, listed hours were 15:00 to 20:00. Price is 1,300/1,800 yen depending on the season. There are private baths, I did not use them and did not ask whether they are available without staying overnight. They stamp the Shizuoka 60 onsen stamp rally. 1. On the 5th floor there is an outdoor bath, with an almost infinity-style view of the bay, but the railings spoil the view. The water is clear, around 40 degrees, and the only thing for washing is ladles. Separately on this floor there is a foot bath with a view of the bay as well. 2. On the 2nd floor there is a set of baths, the photos of these baths on the official site and on the internet match. The water in all the baths is clear. It is comfortable to breathe in the indoor area. 2.1. Rectangular bath with two utaseyu, water around 40 degrees. 2.2. Rectangular wooden bath, around 42 degrees. 2.3. First bath by the rock, water around 41 degrees. 2.4. Second bath by the rock, water around 41 degrees, there is a square grate in the water with a white bundle on it, apparently herbs are inside. 2.5. Sauna. 2.6. Cold bath. 2.7. Outdoor bath set into the rock, no view, around 41 degrees. 2.8. Outdoor rectangular bath with a view of the bay, with three concrete blocks inside for sitting. Around 40 degrees. A fairly bath-rich place. There are also two different scenic baths facing the bay. If you are nearby, a day trip visit is recommended. 19.07.2024
