A radon-bearing weak radioactive spring. Weakly alkaline at pH 8.4 and only lightly mineralized at 729 mg/kg, so the water itself feels gentle on the skin. The radon load of 236.8 Bq/kg (17.6 Mache) is what makes the source distinctive — well into the 'hormesis' tradition of radon bathing. Heated, recirculated and chlorine-disinfected before reaching the bath.

About

Ushitaki Onsen Shikimatsuri (牛滝温泉 四季まつり) sits up a wooded valley in the hills behind Kishiwada, close enough to Osaka for an easy trip but far enough that you hear the stream from the bath. It's an inn that also takes day visitors, and the interesting part is that the two baths run different water: the indoor one a radon spring, weakly alkaline, and the open-air bath its own Ushitaki source, a sodium chloride-bicarbonate water people describe as silky. The rotenburo (露天風呂) is up a flight of stairs from the indoor bath and opens onto a terrace with the mountains and a lot of sky.

637. Shikimatsuri, Kishiwada, Osaka Visited for day use at 750 yen. Day use available from 09:00 to 21:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. Bath photos from the internet match. Outdoor bath. Could have been a very cool view (there's even an infinity-style slope), but an opaque fence ruins everything and there's practically no view. Clear water. There's a smell similar to "bromine." Temperature 40. Indoor bath with clear water, temperature 41. Breathing inside is good. There's a staircase to the floor above leading to a lookout. The onsen is inconvenient to get to and the opaque fence really ruins the bath. Not worth a special day trip. 03.11.2025
