Iwodani No. 12 is a simple acidic thermal spring, sharply acidic at pH 3.0 at the wellhead so it feels faintly prickly on the skin, and classified as a hot spring at a wellhead temperature of 61.9 °C. It is unusually rich in metasilicic acid at 232.9 mg/kg, which leaves the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards. The water is colorless and transparent but carries a metallic taste and a faint metallic odor.

About

The signature draw here is a sprawling garden bathhouse with fourteen different pools fed by the sulfurous springs of Kirishima's Sulfur Valley (硫黄谷, ioudani). The mineral variety is real, different pools carry different water qualities, each with a distinct feel, and the grounds are large enough that it rarely feels crowded. A cedar forest wraps the whole property, and the baths have been drawing visitors for over three centuries.

A hotel with a huge onsen. There are a total of 18 baths; in the middle, the baths are divided into a common area and a separate women's area. There are also 3 baths for men: the men's rotenburo (outdoor bath), and 2 baths in the washing area with a sauna. The baths are huge, you can walk around in them, with a depth of 1.4 meters at the deepest point. Mostly these are sulfur springs, but there are also 2 baths with iron water. In the common area, you can wear a towel or go without one. The common area becomes women-only from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm, so women can enjoy the main part without hesitation. The rotenburo is very beautiful and pleasant; it is said that the rotenburo took first place for "bath layout," and the onsen itself is ranked in the top 250 throughout Japan. It is part of Kyushu 88. There is a cedar grove around, and dinner is served in a hall with panoramic windows overlooking these cedars. I liked the food itself; there are salads with lobster, abalone, Wagyu steak, and of course local pork :) Overall, I really felt connected to this place.

363. Kirishima Hotel, Kirishima, Kagoshima I went for a day visit for 600 yen with a towel. The day visit is listed as 11:00 to 17:00, but on Wednesdays the main large mixed bath and the whole point of this place are not available. They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. Unfortunately I happened to go on a Wednesday and could only use the small separate men’s area. In the small indoor area, it is comfortable to breathe. There is one bath with clear water, at 41 degrees. A second bath with clear water, at 44.5 degrees. A barrel bath with cloudy white water, with a slight smell of proper onsen sulfuriness, at 42 degrees. There is no point in going only to the small area. I plan to visit this place again on a day other than Wednesday, maybe with an overnight stay. 08.01.2025
