A strongly acidic (pH 2.8) sulfur-bearing simple-thermal spring — an opalescent, milky-white water with a moderately astringent bite and a powerful rotten-egg note of H₂S. Free hydrogen sulfide runs to 9.3 mg/kg and total sulfur reaches 8.8 mg/kg, well into the sulfur-bearing band; metasilicic acid at 166 mg/kg adds a faint silica film on top of the pricking, distinctly sulfurous bite that defines the bathhouse's signature Suzume-no-yu pool.

431. Jigoku Onsen Seifusou, Aso, Kumamoto Onsen for ¥2000. Opening hours are listed as 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 15:00). They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. 1. A dedicated mixed-bathing area. Required clothing is provided (shorts for men). But the shorts are terribly uncomfortable (better to bring your own). The bath photos from the internet match. 1.1. Indoor men's bath, milky water, sulfur smell. Temperature is 45. Breathing is comfortable. 1.2. Outdoor area. 1.2.1. Bath with milky water and a sulfur smell, temperature 45. 1.2.2. Bath with milky water and a sulfur smell, carbonated, temperature 40. 1.2.3. Cold oval bath in pebbles. 2. Separate men's area. Indoor bath with large open windows, clear cloudy milky water, temperature 43. Breathing is excellent. On paper I expected the place to be more interesting and cooler, but it didn't work for me. The shorts were just awful for taking an onsen, they should have given the simplest disposable ones instead. 16.01.2025
