Unkai Kusushi Onsen

430. 雲海薬師温泉, Aso, Kumamoto An old-school onsen for 300 yen from the local onsen association in Aso. Operating hours listed as 10:00 to 21:00. They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen book. Bath photo is from the internet, it's accurate. There was a funny moment. I walk up to the payment window — it's closed, nobody inside, no separate payment box either. I figured I'd slide the window open and put the coins in. As I start opening the glass, right on cue a small hatch opens on the right wall inside and an old man pops out. I tell him I want to pay, go to the onsen, and get a stamp. He says just put the money down and head to the changing room. Turns out the old man gets bored sitting at the register, so he sits fully dressed in his jacket in the onsen changing room to chat with visitors (the changing room and bath are basically in the same room). He took my stamp book and went to a separate room to stamp it, gave me props for the number of stamps, and we chatted a bit about onsens as much as the language barrier allowed. Indoor bath with cloudy white-greenish water, temperature 40-41. The air inside is pleasant.
