Appi Hot Spring

A wild river-side onsen deep in the mountains above the Appi Kogen ski resort, accessible only on foot, roughly an hour's walk along a forest path where bear encounters are possible. Three small pools sit along the riverbanks at around 38°C, free to use and unmaintained. Snow lingers into early summer, and the approach path has eroded sections, so it's not a casual detour.
