Nupuntomuraushi Onsen

A remote wild spring deep in the Tokachi mountains of central Hokkaido, where a geyser-like vent alternates between spurting hot water and steam from a mound on the riverbed. Visitors traditionally dug their own pools in the riverside gravel, blending the spring with stream water to taste. The facilities that were once maintained here were destroyed by a 2016 typhoon, and the forest road has been closed since, making this a near-mythical spot kept alive by riders and hikers who remember it.
