About

Akiu Grand Hotel is a large hotel above the Rairai-kyo (磊々峡) gorge, with big baths split between its main building and annex: four named baths in total, alternating between men's and women's use through the week. The open-air tubs at the main building's Bonten-no-yu (梵天の湯) and Megohime-no-yu (愛姫の湯) look straight out at the gorge's rock face, framed by cherry blossoms in spring and colored leaves in autumn. The annex adds a foot bath, a lying-down tub for watching the sky, and a sauna. The water itself is mild and faintly salty, smooth on the skin. Buffet dinners, karaoke rooms and a slightly worn-in, old-school feel round out a stay built more for an easy overnight soak than a quiet retreat.
