About

Neko Hana no Yu was a small, handmade hot spring tucked down a steep gravel side road off Route 148, near the Nagano-Niigata border. Bathing was split between an indoor bath (men's and women's separate) and two outdoor tubs looking over the mountainside, plus a private outdoor bath you could come and go from freely once you'd paid at the entrance. The water ran straight from the spring into wooden tubs, clear but with a faint iron taste and dark mineral flecks drifting through it. The bath was kept for years by a resident temple priest, more a sideline than a business, and regulars came back as much for his stories at reception as for the water. It burned down completely in 2020 and was rebuilt with help from the local community, but it closed for good at the end of August 2025.
