498. 星生温泉 山恵の湯, Oita ★★★ Onsen for 1000. Advertised as 4 types of water. Operating hours: 14:30 to 18:30 (Tue, Fri), 10:30 to 18:30 (Mon, Wed, Thu), 10:00 to 19:30 (Sat, Sun). They stamp the 88 Kyushu Onsens passport. Nearby is a Hitou "secret" onsen. The bath zones rotate between men/women — I was in the zone with one square bath. Bath photos from the internet, partially matches — different seasons and times of day. 1. Outdoor zone. Amazing view of mountains and surrounding trees with a wide panorama. There's a fence, but it's not very tall and the surrounding mountains and hills are still clearly visible. There's a proper sulfurous onsen smell. 1.1. Main large stone bath. The view from the bath is from below, so not the best at this spot. Water is clear, slightly cloudy blue with mineral deposits. Temperature 43. 1.2. Round wooden bath under a roof. Water is clear, slightly cloudy with fine mineral deposits. Temperature 41.5. 1.3. Square bubble bath. Best view of the mountains and surrounding trees from this one. Clear water with mineral deposits. Temperature 38. 1.4. Cold bath. 1.5. Three utaseyu (waterfall baths). 2. Indoor bath with clear, slightly cloudy water. Has a bubble zone and jet. Temperature 43. Breathing inside is good. Amazing place. The view from the rotenburo zone is from below and behind a small fence, but the panorama turns out very wide and really pleasing to the eye. The view also changes with the men/women rotation. The water and smell are also impressive. On top of an onsen at this level, you get the effect of being deep in the countryside. Highly recommended. 07.04.2025
