  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Recoveryfatigue, stress

A weakly alkaline simple thermal spring led by sodium, qualifying on its fluoride and sodium-bicarbonate content. At pH 8.35 it has the soft, slippery touch of the Japanese beauty-water family. Lightly mineralized at 631 mg/kg of dissolved solids, it is gentle on the body; as a cold-mineral source below 25 °C it is reheated for bathing.

About

The village bath at Tenkawa, a short walk from Tenkawa Daibenzaiten shrine (天河大辨財天社). A 2023 refit gave it the name Kigi-no-yu (木木の湯), roughly "the bath of trees", and it is meant literally: the tubs are cut from koyamaki (高野槙, Japanese umbrella pine), the building is finished in Yoshino cedar, cypress, pine and maple, and even the wash buckets and stools are cypress turned from local timber. The water is clear and faintly salty, with no smell to it, a sodium bicarbonate spring that leaves skin slippery. It gets heated in a wood-fired boiler burning thinned timber from the surrounding forest, and you can go look at the boiler from the back rest area. There is an indoor bath and a rock-built rotenburo (露天風呂) facing the mountains, then a big tatami room to flop down in afterwards.

696. Ten no kawa Hot Spring, Tenkawa, Nara ★ Onsen for 800. Located 15 minutes by car from Dorogawa Onsen. Operating hours are 11:00-20:00 (except Tue). They stamp the Wakayama 88 Onsen book. Photos of baths from the internet match. Indoor bath with clear water, temperature around 41. Breathing inside is good - windows were open. Outdoor stone bath. No view - behind a fence. Clear water, temperature around 41. Pleasant place, worth keeping in mind if you're nearby with a car. 14.11.2025
