A simple weakly radioactive spring carrying 236.8 Bq/kg of radon — well into the radon-spring tradition associated with the 'hormesis' lore. Total dissolved solids sit at a light 729 mg/kg, so the water itself reads gentle on the body, weakly alkaline and soft on the skin. At 26.8 °C the source is a cold-class spring and is reheated for bathing.

A small inn in the wooded hills behind Kaizuka, about forty minutes out of central Osaka but quiet enough that you hear the stream and the waterfall (taki, 滝) it takes its name from. The water is a radon spring rising out of granite, the sort that warms you through and stays with you a while after. Bathing is a roomy indoor bath lined in wood and a half-open one facing the trees, and the few guest rooms each come with a private open-air tub above the river.

638. Matsuba Onsen Taki-no-yu, Kaizuka, Osaka ★ A ryokan 20 minutes by car or 50 minutes by public transport from Kansai Airport (KIX). I visited for a day trip for ¥720. Day-trip bathing is listed from 09:00 to 21:00. They stamp the Wakayama 88 onsen stamp rally. The bath photos online match the real place. 1. Outdoor area. Close-up view of the trees, with a road behind them. You can sometimes see cars through the trees, but it is not distracting and the natural view still feels intact. There is a lattice fence, which does spoil the view a bit, but not dramatically. 1.1. Small bath with clear water, temperature 42. 1.2. Large bath with clear water, temperature 38. The water circulation in the bath is strong and the bottom is smooth, so you need to find a comfortable position to lie back, relax your body, and not slide around. 2. Inside, there is a room with a high ceiling and wooden beams. Bath with clear water, temperature 41. The drains were making a loud noise when I visited, but it still felt quite cozy. The air inside is easy to breathe. A solid place, worth keeping in mind for a day trip if you are passing nearby, or as a ryokan close to the airport. 03.11.2025
