An alkaline simple thermal spring (Komaki Onsen). At pH 9.1 it sits firmly in the alkaline, beauty-water family, giving a slippery, smoothing feel on the skin. Although lightly mineralized overall, it carries a generous load of metasilicic acid (about 182 mg/kg), the kind of silica that leaves skin feeling noticeably smoother after a soak.

About

Motoyu (元湯) is Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya's separate day-use bathhouse, an indoor bath only, with no rotenburo. The water is natural onsen, kept at a comfortable temperature rather than scalding hot, and noticeably smooth and slippery on the skin. Colorful Tsugaru vidro (津軽びいどろ) glass fills the windows, tinting the light red, blue and yellow across the bath. The building was once the communal bath of the old Komaki onsen (古牧温泉), well known enough locally that some visitors remember it from TV ads as kids. Hoshino Resorts renovated it after taking over the site, keeping the original entrance and window glass while refreshing the rest, so it still feels a bit worn and retro next to the newer finish. Hotel guests ride a short shuttle bus down from the main building and bathe for free; day visitors are also welcome and pay at the door.

Hoshino Resort Aomoriya Motoyu 星野リゾート青森屋元湯 An old-timer sento near Misawa Station. You can pay separately, or it's included with the ryokan from the review above. 10 minutes on foot from the hotel. One indoor hot bath, feels like 41.5-42 degrees. Pretty stuffy inside. They have milk and a small area to hang out after bathing. Worth stopping by once.
