Simple
Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate spring

A cold-mineral source at 19.5 degrees in the Ryujin area of Tanabe, Wakayama, heated for bathing. The water is alkaline at pH 8.7 and lightly mineralized at 712 mg/kg dissolved solids — bicarbonate is the dominant anion (around 77 percent by mval) and sodium the dominant cation, but every value sits below the therapeutic-spring thresholds, so the certificate qualifies the source as an onsen under the Article 2 fluoride and sodium-bicarbonate provisions rather than as a therapeutic spring. Colorless, odorless and tasteless at the wellhead, with a fine sparkle of bubbles on emergence.

672. Bijin-tei, Ryujin Onsen, Wakayama Visited for higaeri for 800. They sell the Wakayama 12 Onsen stamp book. Photos of the bath from the internet match. Couldn't find the higaeri schedule (only info that higaeri is available when there are overnight guests). Initially around 2 PM the owner turned me away, but I really wanted to get in for the achievements - possibly the onsen was being cleaned or drained. He asked me to come back later, and then I got in. Indoor bath with clear water, slight slippery/soapy feel. Temperature around 42. Breathing inside is bearable. 08.11.2025
