658. Nakanoshima, Nachikatsuura, Wakayama (pt.1) ★★★ A modern powerful ryokan on its own small island. Stayed overnight. No day use. Accessible only by ferry from the Katsuura port pier. You need to first visit the office just before the pier, located in a small building next to the Nachikatsuura Port Post Office. There they do the pre-registration and give you ferry tickets to the island and a return ticket for the next morning to spread out guest arrivals. The place is in excellent condition, high service level, lots of Japanese staff. The tatami room is very pleasant with a small balcony and water view. There's a separate walking/viewing area with an even more scenic surrounding view. Got food for one — at dinner they served kaiseki in a separate hall — it was delicious, and the meat was especially good. There's a gender swap in the morning plus two private onsen baths at 3300 yen each (I booked one). Top-tier place in terms of service, onsen, and atmosphere. Worth a dedicated trip for an overnight stay, and it combines perfectly with a day use visit to Hotel Urashima for a powerful onsen experience in the area. 06.11.2025 07.11.2025
