Tsuyukusa is a small ryokan in Hirayu Onsen with only three baths, all private and used one group at a time: one open-air bath on the roof facing the Northern Alps, and two indoor baths with plaster walls by a professional craftsman and windows of stained glass. The water is kakenagashi (掛け流し), drawn from a spring a few meters behind the building, pale and faintly cloudy with a soft iron smell and a light natural fizz. The inn is a wooden, two-story building from 1971 with eight tatami rooms, about 25 minutes by bus from Kamikochi. The owner is a stained glass artist, and the work turns up throughout the building, in the guest room transoms as much as in the baths.
