About

A natural onsen located in the south of Yakushima, a World Heritage island. This wooden public bath is run by the local community near the trailhead of the Onoa walking path. The bathwater springs from pebbles laid at the bottom of the bathtub. The spring is a simple alkaline spring with a relatively high temperature of about 48 degrees Celsius. Inside the bathhouse, murals depict traditional local dances such as the stick dance and Onoa folk song. It is used by locals, tourists, and hikers.

尾之間温泉 A wonderful onsen that's not for everyone — both outside and inside, a canonical onsen for true enthusiasts. Price: 300 yen. Soap, shampoo, and towels available for a fee. Everything is convenient, everyone is kind. Outside there's a warm foot bath from where I'm writing right now. Inside there are two sections, men's and women's, separated by a concrete partition. Both sides are lively — locals come to wash and in the women's section they chat too. One large concrete bath with stones on the bottom, fits about 10 people. Water is 49 degrees. It's customary to wash with the same water near the bath for obvious reasons. Everything inside is very pleasant. Many people stick to just washing, but me and a couple of old-timers climbed in with groans (I was too shy to groan, but I wanted to). Also, it's open 7:00 to 21:00 except Mondays, which is great.
