145. Koudei onsen, Beppu A mud onsen. Open from 8:15 (actually from 8:30) to 12. I arrived around 7:50, third in line, and then a decent crowd gathered. Entry 900 yen, small towels for 250 yen available inside. No shower or body wash/shampoo. The entrance is off to the side at the parking lot in front of the main hell entrance. No stamp (!). Inside there are two baths. One is a regular onsen bath with clear, slightly cloudy water. Water temperature is hot. The main attraction is the mud bath. Better to go there right after washing, since it fits about 6-7 people max, and many people want in. Also, periodically an old lady kicks everyone out of the mud bath and stirs it with a wooden mop. The mud onsen temperature is hot-. Not much mud remains on the skin, and you can wash it off using basins from the main onsen. Might be worth visiting for the mud experience if you've already been to Hoyoland and want more mud. Best to arrive a bit early in the morning.

This is the mud-bathing facility inside the Bouzu Jigoku hot-mud attraction in Kannawa, Beppu. There are two open-air baths, separated by gender: a hot-water bath and, next to it, a smaller tub of fine mineral mud. Bathers warm up in the hot water first, then soak in the mud a few minutes at a time, stepping into a side room to cool off between soaks and repeating a few times before rinsing the mud off with hot water scooped by hand (there's no shower or amenities). After the war, doctors at a national hospital in Beppu used this mud as a warm compress to treat wounded soldiers, and a bath built for full-body soaking followed from there. Cleaning the mud tub between uses takes real time, so the place only opens in the mornings, and children under elementary-school age aren't allowed in, since the effect is meant to be strong.
