145. Koudei Onsen, Beppu ★ Mud onsen. Open from 8:15 (actually from 8:30) to 12:00. I was there around 7:50, third in line, and then the crowd built up normally. Admission is 900 yen, small towels are 250 yen inside. No showers, no gels or shampoo. The entrance is off to the side in the parking lot in front of the main entrance to the baths. It is not included in Onsen-do Beppu, they do not stamp the 88 onsen stamp book. Inside there are two baths. One is a regular onsen bath with clear, slightly cloudy water. The water temperature is hot. The main feature of the onsen is the mud bath. It is better to go there right after washing, because there is room for at most 6 to 7 people, and there are many people who want to go. Also, from time to time an old lady kicks everyone out of the mud bath and starts stirring it with a wooden mop. The mud onsen temperature is hot. A little mud remains on the skin, and you can wash it off using the basins from the main onsen. Because of the mud feature, it is worth considering a visit if you have already been to Hoyoland and want more mud experience. It is also better to arrive a little early in the morning. 03.05.2024

This is the mud-bathing facility inside the Bouzu Jigoku hot-mud attraction in Kannawa, Beppu. There are two open-air baths, separated by gender: a hot-water bath and, next to it, a smaller tub of fine mineral mud. Bathers warm up in the hot water first, then soak in the mud a few minutes at a time, stepping into a side room to cool off between soaks and repeating a few times before rinsing the mud off with hot water scooped by hand (there's no shower or amenities). After the war, doctors at a national hospital in Beppu used this mud as a warm compress to treat wounded soldiers, and a bath built for full-body soaking followed from there. Cleaning the mud tub between uses takes real time, so the place only opens in the mornings, and children under elementary-school age aren't allowed in, since the effect is meant to be strong.
