Jizaikan has been tending this spring in the Tochiomata (栃尾又) mountains of Niigata for about 400 years, now in its 25th generation. The water runs clear and comes out naturally cool, and the traditional way to bathe here is a long, unhurried soak of an hour or two in the communal baths. The inn runs its spring kakenagashi, unfiltered and undiluted. Guests have three gender-separated communal baths (Reisen-no-yu, 霊泉の湯), two free private indoor baths, and a free private rotenburo beside the Yunozawa river gorge. The place is built around rest and therapeutic bathing (yutoji, 湯治) rather than standard resort hospitality, and the inn is a member of the Nihon Hito wo Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会).
