Takara-no-yu Spring
Bicarbonate
Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate spring

A sodium-led bicarbonate spring — the classic 'jūsō-sen' (soda-water) style, neutral at pH 7.12. With 3,400 mg/kg of dissolved solids and a generous 90 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, it sits in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family — soft on the skin, with just the faintest salty edge on the tongue and otherwise no colour or scent. The unusual twist is a radon load of about 58 Bq/kg, putting it in the 'hormesis' tradition of radon springs as well.

387. Takara no Yu, Kikuchi, Kumamoto Onsen for 400 yen. Operating hours listed as 05:00 to 22:00. Private baths available (didn't take one). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. You need to bring your own soap/shampoo or buy it. Photo of the outdoor bath from the internet matches. Inside: two baths with clear water. The smaller bath at temperature around 42, the larger one at 41. Lots of steam inside but breathing is comfortable. Outside: main bath with clear water, temperature around 38-39. There's a cold bath. No view due to a tall fence, but it's cozy.
