Sodium Na⁺
salt's cation — pairs with chloride to make the water salty.
Bicarbonate HCO₃⁻
"soda" — softens skin, leaves it smooth.
Known good for
  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Aches & jointsstiff shoulders
  • Warmingcold sensitivity

A sodium-led bicarbonate-chloride spring drawn at 58 °C — the bicarbonate side gives the classic 'jūsō-sen' soft, skin-smoothing feel while the chloride finish adds heat-retaining body. Weakly alkaline pH (7.9) puts it squarely in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family. The source is a blend of Totsukawa Onsen wells #2 and #7, shared across the Totsukawa hot-spring village including Hotel Subaru.

About

Deep in the southern Nara mountains, in the village of Totsukawa, quiet enough that wind and birdsong are most of what you hear. The source was found along the Kamiyu river (上湯川) back in the Genroku era (元禄), and Totsukawa was the first onsen area in Japan to declare its baths fully source-fed. Here that works out to 70°C water at 800 litres a minute, nothing heated, nothing recirculated. The bathing area gives you a wide-windowed indoor bath, an open-air bath over the valley, a reclining bath and a waterfall bath for your shoulders, plus small cypress and goemon (五右衛門) tubs sized for one person under the sky. There is a drinking spring of the same water, a footbath by the front entrance, hinoki (檜) tubs in some of the rooms, and a 25 metre pool filled with onsen water, which is not something you run into often.

617. Hotel Subaru, Totsukawa Onsen, Nara ★ Visited on higaeri for 1000. Higaeri stated as 12:00 to 17:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama booklet. When I tried to photograph the water composition chart without glare, an old lady came out and handed me a printout of the water analysis to take with me (with some differences in the readings). 1. Outdoor area. High fence, but the view of the forested mountain is still pleasant, plus a small maple tree in front of the bath in June. 1.1. Square bath with clear water, 42 degrees. 1.2. Utaseyu (standing). 1.3. Utaseyu (sitting). 1.4. Shallow stone bath. 2. Indoor area. Breathable inside. 2.1. Bath with clear water, 41.5 degrees. 2.2. Sauna. 2.3. Cold bath. Nice place. Worth considering when visiting Totsukawa Onsen. 15.06.2025
