大平台温泉(第3号井戸)Ohiradai Onsen (Well No. 3)

Simple

Drawn from Well No. 3 of the Ohiradai source, this is an alkaline simple thermal spring — hot at the wellhead (65 °C) and squarely in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family, with pH 9.2 giving a noticeably slippery feel on the skin. Mineralization is light (775 mg/kg), but a healthy 67.7 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that smooths the skin. Colourless, tasteless and odourless — a clean, well-behaved water.

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

大涌谷温泉 蒸気造成混合泉2号線(仙石原方面)Owakudani Onsen — Steam-Generated Blend Line No. 2 (Sengokuhara branch)

Acidic

A rare steam-generated blended source — volcanic steam from Owakudani is condensed and routed to Sengokuhara through pipeline No. 2. The water is strongly acidic (pH 2.0) with the sharp prickle characteristic of the acidic-spring family, long documented for stubborn skin conditions. It runs hot at the wellhead (64.1 °C) and carries the settled, mineral-rich body of a calcium sulfate-chloride spring, with a generous 120 mg/kg of metasilicic acid layered on top.

Skin conditions

Sulfur and acidic waters are antibacterial and keratolytic, studied for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Skin-absorbed CO₂ and hydrogen sulfide relax the vessel walls; carbon-dioxide springs can raise peripheral blood flow several-fold.
