A lightly mineralized simple thermal spring, with total dissolved solids of about 764 mg/kg, gentle on the body. The pH is neutral (7.4) and the water is recorded as colorless, transparent, tasteless and odorless, with a modest sodium-chloride character. The result is a soft, low-irritation soak.

About

Hamawaki Onsen is a municipal hot spring open until 1 a.m. Called the birthplace of Beppu Onsen alongside Kannawa, its name comes from the area where hot spring water wells up from the beach. In the early Showa period, Hamawaki East and West Onsen merged and were rebuilt in reinforced concrete, with the eastern bath called Hamawaki Koto Onsen, attracting many users. In 1991, as part of redevelopment, the multipurpose hot spring facility Yutopia Hamawaki and a regular bath Hamawaki Onsen were constructed, with an arch monument commemorating the former onsen remaining in front. In October 2018, two baths "Atsuyu" (hot water) and "Nuruyu" (lukewarm water) were added. Unusually for a municipal onsen, it operates until 1 a.m., being closely connected to the daily lives of local residents.

100. Hamawaki Onsen, Beppu Municipal onsen for ¥200. The stated hours are 06:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 01:00 (except the third Monday of the month). They stamp the Beppu onsen-do. Staff are present, but there is no shower or soap. The bath photos online match. Two adjoining indoor baths with clear water, at 44 and 46 degrees. It is easy to breathe inside. 30.04.2024 02.01.2026
