Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A simple thermal spring rising in the Yamada district of Kita ward, Kobe. Neutral and hypotonic, it emerges at 27.3 °C as a cold-mineral spring, so it is heated before bathing. At the source the water is colorless and transparent yet carries a faint metallic taste and a faint hydrogen sulfide note, with around 30 mg/kg of metasilicic acid giving it a gentle, soft feel on the skin.

I visited the maple area in spring — the maples in the outdoor zone were still bare, which made it a bit sad, but this was compensated by the wide variety of baths both indoors and outdoors. Indoors: a regular bath, jets, a special "stone bath" (seems to be cast from artificial stone in one piece?), plus two saunas: a regular dry sauna and a steam sauna, which is pitch dark (there is foot lighting and a small window in the door — a mysterious place). Outdoors there is a "pond-like" bath (photo 1, without defined edges — you enter smoothly into the water and sit on a slope) and a reclining bath under a roof like a gazebo. There is a rotenburo (outdoor bath) with rusty water, which is said to be kakenagashi (continuous flow) (photo 2), and several private barrels also claimed to be kakenagashi. There is also a clearly newly built second sauna outside, accompanied by a temporary cold water pool. Additionally, there is a separate mizuburo (water bath) with local mineral water, from which local sake brewers make sake. Besides the onsen and the usual restaurant for a super sento, there is also a barbecue area nearby. Moreover, this place is noticeably located in the mountains and is a few degrees cooler than the coast. Therefore, this place is interesting and worth visiting more than once. 2026.03.29

354. Suzuran-no-yu, Kobe Super sento with onsen water for 1000-1200 yen, 50-60 minutes from Kobe Station. Operating hours listed as 10:00 to 24:00. They stamp the 41 Super Sento of Kansai 24/25 book. There's a restaurant, massage, shop, massage chairs, and manga. Two sets of baths that rotate between men/women — Autumn Leaves and Bamboo Forest. I was in the second one. 1. Outdoor zone. View of trees, spacious. 1.1. Oval bath with clear water, temperature around 42. 1.2. Wooden square bath, slightly cloudy clear water, temperature around 40-41. 1.3. Square bath with stones on the floor, clear brownish-green-white water, temperature around 40-41. 1.4. Small stone bath, clear brownish-green-white water, temperature around 40-41. 1.5. Two barrels. 2. Indoor zone. 2.1. Stone bath, slightly cloudy clear water, temperature around 40. 2.2. Square bath, slightly cloudy clear water, temperature around 40. 2.3. Electric bath zone. 2.4. Four jet baths. 2.5. Sauna. 2.6. Steam bath. 2.7. Cold bath. A pleasant place. Although it's inconvenient to get to without a car, it's worth considering for excursions near Kobe.
