Seiryuso is a small ryokan in the mountains outside Shimonita, built around a spring that comes up naturally cold with a faint fizz. A pool fed straight from the source sits next to a separate, gently heated pool kept on the lukewarm side, so you can settle in for a long soak rather than rush through it. The baths are split by gender, the women's called Shiratama-no-yu (白玉の湯) and the men's Senkyo-no-yu (仙境の湯). For day visitors only the open-air bath is open, a spot with a pond nearby and the sound of running water; some guest rooms also have their own private indoor bath. It's an old-school, no-frills inn and a member of Nihon Hitou o Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association for Japan's secluded hot-spring inns. The place feels quiet and a little weathered, without a shower in the bathing area (you wash at a tap) and without towel rental.
