BicarbonateSodium Bicarbonate-Carbonate spring

A sodium bicarbonate cold-mineral spring of the classic Japanese beauty-water family. Alkaline at pH 8.9, it has the slippery, skin-smoothing feel typical of bicarbonate water. The source emerges at just 21.6 °C, below the 25 °C threshold, so it is reheated for bathing. Fluoride is also listed among the components that qualify it as an onsen under the Hot Spring Law.

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

  • General contraindications for bathing: acute phase of illness (especially with fever), active tuberculosis, advanced malignant tumors or marked physical debilitation such as severe anemia, serious heart or lung disease causing breathlessness even on slight exertion, severe kidney disease with edema, gastrointestinal bleeding, visible hemorrhage, and acute exacerbation of a chronic illness.
