Sodium Chloride spring

Tani-no-yu source in Beppu's Kitanaka district, a sodium chloride spring emerging hot at 71.1 °C and weakly acidic at pH 4.9 — the wellhead carries a faint sour taste. Heat-retaining salt water, moderately mineralized (3,306 mg/kg dissolved), with an unusually generous 357.6 mg/kg of metasilicic acid that leaves the kind of silica film associated with Japan's beauty-water family. Listed under the legacy name shokuen-sen (common-salt spring).

81. Taninoyu, Beppu ★★ An old-school onsen for ¥200 (pay at the window before the stairs). Opening hours are listed as 06:00 to 21:30. They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do seal. Staff may be at the payment window. No shower. The water is clear, and the temperature is 44.5. It is easy to breathe inside. The main feature of the onsen is that the men's side has a shrine, and beneath it there is a cave with an old spring. The cave itself is small, but deep, I definitely would not go down there. A very unusual onsen, it feels surreal, like something out of a movie or a game. The men's bath is especially recommended. 29.04.2024 04.01.2026
