A sodium chloride spring — salty and heat-retaining, though well below ocean salinity. Alkaline at pH 8.4, it has the soft, slippery feel of Japan's beauty-water family. The water carries a faint yellow-brown tint and a slight metallic iron note at the source, and with dissolved solids around 3,309 mg/kg it sits in moderately mineralized territory with noticeable body.

About

The bathing side of the Ayuchaya (鮎茶屋) complex in Arida, which also holds a hotel and a dining hall. The water is a sodium chloride spring with enough bicarbonate in it to feel genuinely slippery on the skin. There is a large open-air rock bath open to the trees and the sky, and indoors a shallow lying-down bath and a walking bath, a sauna fired with Kishu binchotan charcoal (紀州備長炭), a steam sauna, and a cool spring pool set right beside the hot tub so you can go back and forth.

639. Aridagawaonsen Hikari Hot Spring, Arida, Wakayama Visited for day use at 950 yen. Day use available from 11:00 to 23:00 (Mon-Fri) and 07:00 to 23:00 (Sat-Sun). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. Bath photos from the internet match roughly — the photos look too new and polished. 1. Indoor zone. Breathing inside is fine. 1.1. Bath with clear water, temperature 41. I thought there was some smell, maybe chlorine or mixed with something. 1.2. Bath with clear water, temperature 28. 1.3. Two saunas. 1.4. Cold bath. 2. Outdoor zone. No view, behind a fence. 2.1. Small stone bath. Clear water with slight cloudiness. Temperature 42. There were wood shavings from trees, leaves, and some grime in the water, possibly limescale. 2.2. Large barrel with clear water, temperature 41. 2.3. Shallow walking bath. A so-so place, would only visit for the achievement. 03.11.2025
