About
Yakushiyu is the indoor cypress bath among Sujiyu Onsen's three public bathhouses, in a small mountain hot-spring hamlet in Kokonoe, Oita. It's unstaffed: pay the coin-box fee yourself at the entrance, and the cypress-lined room carries a mild woody scent. The water comes out clear with a faint brown tint and no sulfur smell, warming the skin slowly and leaving it smooth. The hall swaps between men and women daily with the neighboring outdoor bath, Iwan-yu (岩ん湯), so at any given time this one is single-sex. Bring your own soap and shampoo, since the bathhouse supplies neither.
