About

Yumotoya is a ryokan in Iwamuro Onsen (岩室温泉), a hot spring town in Niigata. It runs two large baths, Karinoyu (雁の湯) with an open-air pool built around big rocks and Yumedono (夢殿) with a log-lined outdoor tub, each paired with an indoor bath and a sauna; men's and women's sides swap between morning and afternoon, so a two-night stay lets you try both. There's also a reservable private open-air bath, and a few rooms in the detached Kasyoan (華翔庵) wing come with their own onsen bath. The water has a faint sulfur smell and is known locally as good for the skin. The inn has been open since 1880, and the bath named Karinoyu recalls a local legend of a wounded goose that healed itself bathing in the spring.
