About

Houraikan is a small ryokan in Kikuchi Onsen that's been running since 1955, and the building shows it: an aged, Showa-era feel that visitors describe as worn but well cared for, with tatami rooms kept spotless. The onsen water here is kept flowing straight from the source rather than reheated or recirculated, and it has the soft, faintly smoothing feel on the skin that Kikuchi's water is known for. Bathing is modest in scale: a small indoor tub, a compact open-air bath that fits about two people, and a private (kashikiri, 貸切) bath you can reserve for yourselves. A few rooms come with their own onsen bath, toilet, and washbasin. Small dogs are welcome to stay with their owners.
