The open-air baths here face the Tsurusenkei (鶴仙渓) gorge, and you can hear the river while you soak. The women's rotenburo, Hakucho-no-yu (白鳥の湯), uses a Shigaraki ceramic tub; the men's, Hyakkan-no-yu (百間の湯), is a rock-built outdoor bath. There are also indoor baths and two private baths (kashikiri, 貸切風呂): Koharu (小春), a cypress tub, and Akinobo (秋の坊), a rock bath. Some rooms come with their own in-room onsen. The spring at Yamanaka Onsen has been flowing for about 1,300 years, and the poet Matsuo Basho is said to have been taken with it.
