Every room at this small ryokan in the Waita onsen area (わいた温泉郷), at the foot of Mt. Wakuta (湧蓋山), has its own private half-open-air bath, fed straight from the spring with no water or heat added. The water is colorless and nearly odorless, clean enough to drink, and you can drain and refill the tub yourself whenever you like. There's no shared bath, just the one in your room, and no restaurant either, so bring your own food. The inn sits up a narrow mountain road with forest and valley views and little sound beyond birdsong.
